Recently we were lucky enough to travel the Bendelby Ranges In south Australia!

So, bringing the two kids on camping adventures  is always a hoot-  It absolutely promises unforgettable moments, and creates those epic core memories for your children; I have grown to love camping adventures, for many reasons.

This time, Ihsan wanted to explore the 4wd tracks (I must add this is the first time I have done it, and the kids too!)  and yup, It came with its challenges—especially getting stuck on some rocks, and me jumping out the car a few times because I was so scared! *insert fear of roller coasters- its pretty similar!*

Our Bendelby trip was a whirlwind of excitement, inspiration, and a touch of chaos. I wish we stayed longer!

The Dusty Tracks and campsite

As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by an endless expanse of rugged terrain. The private land is MASSIVE and yes its easy to get lost!  We checked in to a beautiful little office and greeting with a very friendly family dog who was well loved, and very happy for pats.

Staff live onsite and where so helpful and lovely. they helped us line up a easy 4wd track to begin with and suggested some beautiful walks too.

We stayed in a remote Campsite  called "Sheoak" , the campsite was large enough to accommodate our OPUS and our friends lengthy caravan nestled near was a small pine forest that thrived with local wildlife and was easy enough for the kids to go exploring. All campsites have toilets (compostable) , and firewood is provided too!

The flies however, are also very friendly so our mosquito hats where put to good use.

The Bendelby Ranges are known for their four-wheel drive tracks, and they did not disappoint. With the kids in the back, we buckled up and set off on an easy route first, but quickly decided a challenge was in the air - so we went tackling the rocky paths and dry creek beds that make this place such a paradise for off-road enthusiasts. But, oh boy, was it dusty, and rocky!

The kids, did fantastic! They eagerly pointed out the wildlife and landscape features and the views from the top of those climbs where so worth it.

I just wish the signage was a little better, especially for less experienced track finders like us -

By the end of each track, everything—us, the car, and even our snacks—was coated in a fine layer of red dust. It was all part of the experience, adding a rustic charm to our off-road escapades.

Inspiration Strikes: Sketches and Paintings

The landscapes and picturesque skies left me inspired, and I couldn’t wait to capture the essence of the trip through art. I started sketching right there in the campsite, using the colours and textures of the environment to influence my work. There’s something about the Bendelby Ranges—the vast open spaces, the interplay of light and shadow, and the vibrant hues of the outback—that sparks creativity.

Since returning home, I’ve begun transforming those sketches into a painting. It’s still a work in progress, but each brushstroke brings back memories of the kids' laughter, the thrill of the four-wheel drive tracks, and the awe of that powerful thunderstorm. This trip was more than just a family getaway; it was a source of inspiration that continues to unfold through my art.

Tips for Families Traveling to Bendelby Ranges

If you’re planning a family trip to the Bendelby Ranges, here are a few tips based on our experience:

  1. Embrace the Dust: There’s no escaping it, so come prepared. Bring extra water for rinsing off and a sense of humour when you find dust in your gear weeks later!
  2. Embrace the flies - after all there where there first. pack a fly net hat!
  3. Pack Snacks and Games: The off-road tracks can be long, and kids might need some entertainment during the drive. Simple games and tasty treats go a long way. we packed a lunch in our car fridge and ate on the lookout.
  4. Check the Weather: It turns quickly and unexpectedly so making sure you pack appropriately is well worth it.
  5. visit the sunset lookout - we spent ages up there taking photos and soaking in the view. It really is magical
  6. The walks are beautiful too do yourself a favour and check out the walking trails
  7. Newly updated showers and facilities, We were so impressed with the water tank showers, clean and a touch of rustic.
  8. Capture the Moments: Whether through photos, sketches, or journaling, document the adventure. The Bendelby Ranges have a way of inspiring creativity in unexpected ways.

Despite the dust, the bumps, and the flies, traveling with kids in the Bendelby Ranges was an experience we’ll cherish forever. It was a reminder of the beauty of the Australian landscape and the magic that unfolds when you embrace the great outdoors, even with little ones in tow.
